Lonnie served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years including the Vietnam War. Lonnie suffers from diabetes and suffers from the results of being exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. He is unable to take care of himself and cannot walk without assistance. Mary has been forced to leave her job in order to take care of Lonnie. They have so many medical bills, they have been unable to complete repairs on their home.
Their home was in need of: repairs to the heating system that is not working, replace the leaking roof, repair the window casings that has rotted creating drafts, repair the back steps, modify the bathroom to make it accessible for Lonnie, new energy-efficient appliances, interior and exterior painting, pest control, and landscaping.
The Blue Crew on Service Day – Wednesday, September 20, 2017 installed energy-efficient storm doors, painted the interior and exterior, repaired the fence and back steps, and landscape. A flagpole was installed so that later in the day the flag could be presented to Mr. Chapell and raised with an Honor Guard. Blue Cross Blue Shield employee, Beth Gooch sang the National Anthem.
In addition to the work of the Blue Crew, Revitalize CDC repaired the heating system, replaced the leaking roof, repaired the window casings that were rotting, replaced the back steps, and completed pest control.
